Blind Flanges
Designed to cap off the ends of a line, valve, or pressure vessel opening, a Blind flange has no bore. Because there is no bore, Blinds are well-suited to withstand bending stress from high pressure and temperature applications without failure. They’re often altered with bores and NPT threads for custom applications as well.
Like all ANSI flanges, a Blind flange has mounting holes around the perimeter, and is bolted in place. Gasket sealing rings are machined into the mating surface. Blind flanges will have either a raised face, flat face, or RTJ (ring type joint) facing, the selection of which depends on the specific pressure handling requirements of your job.
Best practice, as recommended by gasket manufacturers, is to use a standard gasket for Blind flanges. If the flange has a raised face, a standard ring gasket is typically appropriate. If the Blind has a flat face, a full face gasket is typically used. For ring type joint facing, an RTJ gasket is required.
Blind flanges are among the most common flanges in use, and are necessary for many different applications. Most often, they’re installed to block off a section of pipe, a nozzle or valve that is not used, for pressure tests in a plant, or simply because a particular opening is not presently needed. Rather than permanently capping that opening, a Blind flange can be bolted in place and later removed when the opening is needed. The Blind can then be repurposed.
High Hub Blind flanges, much like traditional Blinds, have no bore. However, there is additional hub material, which makes them ideal for applications where custom machining is required. High Hub flanges are available in a wide range of sizes and material grades, and meet B16.5 specifications.
