How A Coker Valve Works
The coker process is mainly a thermal process that uses heat to crack the long-chain hydrocarbon molecules in the residual oil feed into shorter chain molecules. This results in leaving behind the excess carbon in the form of petroleum coke.
The converted material flows into large drums. This is where the solid coke is allowed to settle and the lighter liquid is collected and sent to a fractionator which separates the liquid content. When a drum fills with coke, feed is switched to another drum. The full drum is cooled with water, then opened so that the solid coke can be drilled out using pressurized water jets.
