Globe Valve

Globe valves are primarily designed to stop, start and regulate flow. The main components of the Globe valve are similar to those of the Gate valve, those being the bonnet, stem, disk and seat. The stem is turned, by hand or via actuation, and the disk is raised or lowered to open or close the valve.

Globe valves restrict the flow of fluid when the distance between the movable disk, most often being a plug, and the seat is changed. Fluid flows through a port in the center of the seat, and is more or less restricted by the plug’s proximity to that hole.

In low temperature application, Globe valves are typically installed so that the pressure is under the disk. When the disk is raised, flow rises toward it. This contributes to easy operation and helps protect the packing. In high temperature service, Globe valves are usually installed so that the pressure is above the disk. This is done to prevent the disk from lifting off of the seat should the stem contract when cooling.

Globe valves are in wide use across a variety of industries. Common applications include cooling water and fuel oil systems where flow needs to be regulated, feed water, chemical feed, condenser air extraction and extraction drain systems, turbine seals, drains and lube oil systems, among many others.
