Lap Joint Flanges

Lap Joint flanges are used in conjunction with a Stub End, which fits through the bore of the flange and is secured to the pipe via weld. Sometimes referred to as a Backing flange, the Lap Joint flange is free to rotate around the stub end, which ensures there will be no issues with bolt hole alignment. Lap Joint flanges are ideal for applications where frequent dismantling is required.

While most other flange types come standard with a raised face, the Lap Joint flange does not. Bolting pressure is transmitted to the gasket by the pressure of the flange against the back of the Stub End.

Lap Joint flanges, in combination with stub ends, can be a very cost-effective solution for stainless or nickel alloy pipelines. Because these flanges have no contact with pipe medium, they’re generally made of affordable carbon steel, with the Stub End being made of the same corrosion resistant alloy as the pipe it’s welded to. Carbon steel is much less expensive than nickel alloys such as Monel® 400 or Hastelloy® C276, for example. A carbon steel Lap Joint with an alloy Stub End will be much less expensive than a Weld Neck flange made entirely of the same alloy. Lap Joint flanges can easily be salvaged for later use as well.
