Strictly speaking, Plates are thick slabs of metal. They typically come from the mill in rectangular sections with square edges, which can then be cut and shaped as required.

The distinction between Sheet and Plate is ambiguous. Generally speaking, Sheet is also a slab of metal, but thinner and cut from a continuously rolled coil. Plate is a thicker form of flat metal that has been produced as a single item. Plate is typically used in machines, structural sections and larger fabrications.
