Seamless Pipe

James Duva, Inc. provides seamless pipe products with the strength to withstand high working pressures, in a wide variety of alloy and nominal pipe size (NPS).

Seamless pipe is fabricated without a welded seam. A cylindrical bar of steel is pierced through the center and drawn over a mandrel. The billet is then forced through a die, rolled and stretched until it meets the exact diameter and wall thickness as required by ASME dimensional standards.

Higher Working Pressure

Most pipe failures occur at a welded seam. Because seamless pipe has no weld seam, it can withstand much higher working pressures than welded pipe – 20% higher ASME working pressures than welded pipe of the same material and size. Seamless pipe is equally strong around its entire circumference. Due to the rolling and stretching process used to produce seamless pipe, it may have an inconsistent wall thickness when compared to the more precise thickness of sheets used to produce welded pipe. However, seamless pipe is superior in high-pressure, high-temperature applications because it will meet requirements that welded pipe cannot. Applications and industries include power generation, refining, hydrocarbon and pharmaceutical industries, and Oil and Gas infrastructure. In general, the application of seamless pipes depends on the thickness of the pipe wall.

Corrosion Resistance

In comparison to other types of piping, seamless pipe does not require any welding or joining, and is simply formed from solid round billet, which adds to its strength and other characteristics including corrosion resistance. For instance, an Incoloy 800H seamless pipe will be made entirely of 800H and will be 100% corrosion resistant to that alloy’s capabilities. A welded pipe of the same alloy, on the other hand, will have a weld seam. Although the weld may have been performed with welding
rod of the same alloy, it is inherently less resistant than pipe made from solid billet.
