Stub Ends

Used in conjunction with a backing flange, a Stub End is, essentially, a short length of pipe with one flared end and one square-cut end, which is welded to a pipe of the same NPS, material grade and schedule. The combination of a Stub End and a backing flange is generally used as an alternative to a standard flange. As it is welded to the pipe, only the Stub End has to be of the same material grade as the pipe, meaning the flange can be constructed of lower-cost carbon steel. Stub ends are manufactured in three different types.

Type A Stub Ends are produced and machined to fit Lap Joint flanges. They are the most common.

Type B Stub Ends are used in conjunction with standard Slip-On flanges.

Type C Stub Ends can be used both with Lap Joint and Slip-On backing flanges. They’re the least commonly used.
