James Duva, Inc. stocks stub ends in addition to many of your piping & welding needs. Our products are reliable and can be used in high pressure applications.
Often used in place of Welded Flanges when a rotating backup flange is needed, Stub Ends are also sometimes called Vanstone Flared Laps or Lap Joints and may be used in high pressure pipelines to reduce cost.
Stub ends are manufactured in three different types and two standard lengths. Type A is machined to fit lap joint flanges. Type B is suited for standard slip-on flanges acting as lap-joint flanges. Type C is able to be used both with lap joint and slip-on backing flanges and are fabricated out of pipes. Lastly, type CS is similar to C however that the lap face has concentric serrations machined during the manufacturing process.
Stub ends will need to be wetted and made if a grade of material that meets the process design and service conditions. However, a lap flange is un-wetted and can be made of a lower grade material which will save you money on your project.
Ease of Installation & Assembly
A lap flange can easily be slipped over a stub end and welded into a pipe stool. The lap flange and backing flange can revolve around the stub end that is attached to the spool.
Using a combination of a lap joint and stub end will be very beneficial during the installation process. In the situation of combining spools in the field, one flange can be rotated when aligning the bolt holes. The can be extremely beneficial in the circumstance that the spool needs to be removed frequently.
